New York Mets 3B David Wright to undergo shoulder surgery

David Wright's ongoing injury saga continued Monday as the New York Mets announced he decided to undergo surgery to repair a right rotator cuff.

The 34-year-old third baseman will undergo the shoulder surgery Tuesday in New York.

"They just thought this was the only thing they needed to get done, to take care of so he could get back on the field and continue the process of trying to get back," Mets manager Terry Collins said before Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. "It's really tough to watch."

Wright has appeared in just 75 games since 2015 due to various shoulder, back and neck issues. He was originally injured April 14, 2015, stealing second base and the original diagnosis was a right hamstring strain.

He was eventually diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal column that will affect him throughout his life. Last season, Wright underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck and did not play after May 27.

Wright reported to spring training hoping to play but experienced shoulder weakness. He made it back to the field by appearing in three rehab games with Class A St. Lucie but last Monday, the Mets announced he was shutting it down due to shoulder pain.

Despite the injuries and view of many that Wright should retire, Collins believes the veteran wants to make it back at some point.

"The one thing I can tell you is that during our discussions, he just said, 'Look, I think I still have something to offer and I've got to give myself that chance to see if I could do it,'" Collins said. "We sit back as people who watched him when he was the best, and say, 'Why would you go through it?' I just think this guy's heart's still in it."

Wright is under contract for three more seasons as part of an eight-year, $138 million deal.

He made his major league debut in July 2004, was named team captain in 2013 and owns a career batting average of .296 to go along with 242 homers and 970 RBIs.

Besides Wright, the Mets also announced three other players will undergo season-ending surgery.

Michael Conforto, who tore the posterior capsule in his left shoulder on Aug. 24, will undergo surgery this week.

T.J. Rivera will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow this week and reliever Josh Edgin will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Tuesday.
