The New York Yankees placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left oblique strain.

Hicks suffered the injury in Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox while making a running catch of Hanley Ramirez's deep drive to center field in the top of the sixth inning

"I just got the report that he felt something, and he's in an MRI tube," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters after the game.

Jacoby Ellsbury came in to replace Hicks in the Yankees' 5-1 victory at Yankee Stadium. Ellsbury tripled in his lone at-bat and likely will move back into the starting lineup while Hicks is sidelined.

Hicks, 27, missed 39 games earlier this season due to a right oblique strain suffered in a June 25 game. He has hit .207 in 22 games since returning to the lineup on Aug. 10 with three homers and 11 RBI.

For the season, Hicks is hitting .265 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs in 82 games.

In another move announced before Saturday night's game against the Red Sox, the Yankees recalled left-hander Caleb Smith from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Smith, 26, has appeared in seven games (two starts) for the Yankees this season, going 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA in 17 2/3 innings.
