CHICAGO -- Yolmer Sanchez drove in Tim Anderson with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 3-2 win against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Anderson led off the inning with a double to left field off reliever Joe Jimenez (0-2), who didn't record an out and took the loss. Sanchez laced his walk-off hit about six feet inside the foul line in right field, easily scoring Anderson from second.
Juan Minaya (2-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth.
The starting pitchers each settled for no-decisions after allowing two runs apiece and each throwing 71 strikes and 104 pitches. Justin Verlander went seven innings for the Tigers, allowing six hits and striking out eight. Gonzalez went eight innings for Chicago, giving up seven hits and fanning nine.
Jose Abreu went 2-for-2 with a home run and was intentionally walked twice, and Sanchez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the White Sox (51-76).
Victor Martinez went 3-for-4 and Jose Iglesias went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers (55-72).
Chicago tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning on a single by Avisail Garcia, but failed to capitalize on a chance to go ahead in the seventh. The White Sox put runners at first and third with one out on singles by Sanchez and Adam Engel, but Verlander escaped without allowing a run.
Alen Hanson hit a foul pop up for the second out and Sanchez was thrown out at the plate on a double steal attempt to end the inning. Detroit reliever Alex Wilson also escaped a jam in the eighth, getting Kevan Smith to ground into an inning-ending double play with two runners on base.
The White Sox took an early 1-0 lead on Abreu's solo home run in the first inning, and it stood for four innings.
Detroit finally got to Gonzalez in the fifth, after Martinez hit a lead-off single and Andrew Romine doubled him to third. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead after Jose Iglesias plated both with a bloop single, which allowed Verlander to work with a lead for the first time.
