Baltimore Orioles blast Boston Red Sox behind bat of Trey Mancini

BOSTON -- Trey Mancini drove in four runs, and the Baltimore Orioles collected 20 hits and took advantage of five Boston errors in a 16-3 rout of the Red Sox on Friday night.

The Orioles, reaching a season high in runs and matching their high in hits, won for the third time in four games as they strive to stay alive in the crowded American League wild card chase. They're still two games under .500 (63-65) but came in just three games out of a spot -- albeit with six teams ahead of them.

The Red Sox, hammered for 13 runs and 17 hits in a loss at Cleveland Thursday night, were guilty of a season-high in errors as Rick Porcello's four-game winning streak came crashing to an end.

Porcello, losing for the third time to the Orioles this season, fell to 8-15 by allowing a career-worst 11 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Only four of the runs were earned with his own throwing error staring the carnage.

Mark Trumbo (No. 20) and Chris Davis (No. 21) hit solo homers. Davis, Tim Beckham and Seth Smith all drove in two runs, Jonathan Schoop had four hits (two runs scored and an RBI), and Manny Machado had three hits to back Jeremy Hellickson (8-7, 2-2 with the Orioles).

Boston's Mitch Moreland moved from first base to the mound for the ninth inning -- his second big-league pitching effort. He struck Caleb Joseph out with an 89-mph fastball, then got Craig Gentry to ground out. He hit 90 on the gun to Mancini, who then lined one for his third hit of the game. Davis then singled off the wall in left for his 1,000th major league hit. Moreland reached 94 as Trumbo grounded out.

Hellickson -- "Helly" for Players Weekend -- worked seven innings, yielding three runs (two earned), two on a home run by Xander Bogaerts.

The teams combined for eight errors while Boston's five matched this season's major league high.

Already playing with Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list, the Red Sox took another second base hit when Eduardo Nunez left the game with a left wrist/left thumb strain as he made contact with Machado on a steal in the second inning. X-rays were negative and Nunez was listed as day-to-day.

Porcello's throwing error, after he knocked down Adam Jones' blistering comebacker, was the key to the two-run first inning. One run scored on the error and another on Mancini's sacrifice fly.

Trumbo led off the second with his home run. A wild pitch, the throwing error by Sandy Leon that knocked second baseman Nunez out of the game, and Machado's RBI single made it 5-0 in the second.

Bogaerts hit his homer in the bottom of the inning but Davis answered that with his solo shot with one out in the third.

The Orioles used an error by Bogaerts to chase Porcello with three runs in the fifth -- Mancini driving in one run and Smith two, both with singles. Beckham delivered two more runs with a long double -- and Schoop's second single of the inning made it 12-2. Jones' single delivered the 13th run and the runners advanced on Boston's fifth error of the game.

LHP Wade Miley, rejoining the team after tending to his ailing infant, will start Sunday's series finale for Baltimore, after RH Kevin Gausman faces LH Eduardo Rodriguez Saturday night. Gausman was ejected from his last Fenway start for hitting Xander Bogaerts in the back with a breaking pitch amid the hostilities being exchanged between the teams back in the early weeks of the season. Rodriguez is 0-1 with six no-decisions since coming off the DL. ... CF Adam Jones made his first Fenway appearance since reporting hearing racial taunts from the count on his last visit.
