The Minnesota Twins placed infielder Miguel Sano on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a left shin stress reaction.

Sano fouled a ball off his shin Friday night in the same game that he hit two home runs in a 10-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had to leave the game in the seventh inning because of soreness in the shin. The move is retroactive to Sunday.

Sano is hitting .267 with 28 home runs and 77 RBIs in 111 games this season.

To replace Sano on the 25-man roster, the Twins recalled infielder Kennys Vargas from Triple-A Rochester.

The Twins also called up right-hander Tim Melville, who will start the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox.

Vargas will be making his fifth stint with the Twins, hitting .243 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 51 games. He is batting .253 with nine home runs in 51 games with Rochester this season, including hitting .394 (13-for-33) with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs in nine games since being optioned Aug. 9.

Melville, 27, signed with the Twins as a minor league free agent in June and has gone 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) for Rochester this season.

Additionally, the Twins optioned left-hander Nik Turley to Triple-A but then recalled him as the 26th man for Monday's doubleheader in Chicago. He will be available for both games.
