HOUSTON -- Patrick Corbin came within an out of his first complete game in nearly four years, scattering four hits in 8 2/3 innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a split of their four-game, home-and-home interleague series with the Houston Astros with a 4-0 victory on Thursday at Minute Maid Park.
Corbin (10-11) struck out seven, issued one walk and threw 71 of 105 pitches for strikes. He did not surrender an extra-base hit until Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel roped a two-out double to left in the ninth inning, costing Corbin a chance at his fourth career complete game and first since going eight innings in a 3-0 loss at San Francisco Sept. 6, 2013.
Right-hander Archie Bradley relieved Corbin and retired Marwin Gonzalez on a called third strike to preserve the shutout.
Corbin retired 11 consecutive batters before the Gurriel double.
The Diamondbacks (67-54) provided the requisite run support beginning in the third inning, with catcher Jeff Mathis delivering a run-scoring single that scored Ketel Marte from third base. Daniel Descalso added an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning, the third of the season for the Diamondbacks, when his fly ball to center field ricocheted off the wall and past pursuing Astros center fielder Jake Marisnick.
For Descalso, it was his seventh home run on the season.
Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb added the second home run off Astros right-hander Mike Fiers (7-8) leading off the sixth inning, his 26th homer carrying into the home bullpen in right-center.
Fiers was pulled after facing two additional batters in the sixth. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
The Astros (74-47) surrendered an unearned run in the eighth inning when an errant throw by catcher Max Stassi enabled David Peralta to score after he advanced to third on a wild pitch.
NOTES: Diamondbacks RHP Rubby De La Rosa will require a second Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. De La Rosa previously underwent the procedure in 2011. He is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA over nine appearances this season. ... Astros LHP Tony Sipp (right calf soreness) should began a rehab assignment during the end of the current homestand. ... Arizona optioned LHP Anthony Banda to Triple-A Reno and reinstated OF David Peralta from the paternity list. Banda was 1-3 with a 7.32 ERA over four starts. Peralta and his wife, Jordan, welcomed their first child on Aug. 14, the date of his 30th birthday. ... Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas experienced a setback with his rehab for right groin tendinitis and will visit with a specialist on Monday.
