Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker set for season-ending arm surgery

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker will undergo season-ending surgery to relieve pressure on a nerve in his right forearm, the team announced Sunday.

Shoemaker will undergo the surgical procedure on Tuesday in Los Angeles. The Angels said a general timetable for recovery from such a surgery is 12 to 14 weeks. Dr. Steve Shin will perform the operation to release the radial nerve in Shoemaker's forearm.

The 30-year-old Shoemaker, who has not pitched in the majors since mid-June, had another setback in his rehabilitation on Friday when he felt pain in the forearm while throwing a bullpen session.

"It's one of those things where, right then and there, I just wanted to run through a wall," Shoemaker said, according to told the Los Angeles Times. "It was a couple rough hours after the bullpen, me being angry and frustrated."

Shoemaker added about the operation, according to the Orange County Register, "Just talking to all our guys, the medical professionals, the surgeons, when we put it all together, we've done everything we can. We've exhausted all options."

Shoemaker finishes the season with a 6-3 record and 4.52 ERA in 14 starts. He had won five of six decisions before leaving a start after three innings against the New York Yankees on June 14.

He had his best year in his first full season with Los Angeles in 2014, posting a 16-4 record and 3.04 ERA to finish second in the American League Rookie of the Year balloting to Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox.

For his career, Shoemaker owns a 38-30 record and a 3.87 ERA in 94 games, including 86 starts.
