The Kansas City Royals placed All-Star catcher Salvador Perez on the 10-day disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle on the right side of his chest.

An MRI exam revealed the injury after Perez left Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners after six innings. The move was retroactive to Saturday.

Perez will be re-evaluated in the next few days when the swelling diminishes.

Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters Sunday the "worst-case scenario was four weeks" for Perez being out but hopes it will be more like 10 to 14 days.

Perez, 27, is hitting .278 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs in 99 games this season.

Drew Butera will do the majority of the catching in Perez's absence. Butera, 33, entered Sunday hitting .250 with two homers nine RBIs in 45 games.

The Royals recalled catcher Cam Gallagher from Triple-A Omaha to fill the roster spot. Gallagher, 24, is hitting .294 with five home runs and 34 RBIs this season for Omaha and will be making his major league debut.

"We've been through this before," Yost said. "This is nothing new to us. You just deal with it and move on. Guys understand. We'll have Drew and Cam here to pick up the slack behind the plate. We feel like we can cover it."
