Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The Miami Marlins were in no danger of losing to the Washington Nationals in the ninth inning Wednesday, but Giancarlo Stanton still ended the game with a dramatic catch.
Miami led Washington 7-0 with two outs in the bottom of the inning at Marlins Park when Stanton gave the small crowd even more to cheer about.
Nationals shortstop Wilmer Difo began the inning with a single off of Marlins righty Odrisamer Despaigne. Jose Lobaton grounded into a double play in the next at-bat. Adrian Sanchez then singled off of Despaigne, before Brian Goodwin came up to bat.
The Nationals' centerfielder was facing an 0-2 count before Despaigne's fourth offering. Despaigne fired in an 81.7 mph changeup. Goodwin responded by drilling the pitch to deep right field. Stanton gave chase, before leaving his feet. He jumped up toward the wall and snared the baseball just as it was about to clear the fence. He did a 360-degree turn during the play, which resulted in the ball safely landing in the webbing of his glove.
Stanton was 1-for-5 with an RBI in the 7-0 victory.
"I wasn't sure if it was going over, but I knew to give a good pass at it regardless," Stanton told MLB.com. According to Statcast, Stanton traveled 94 feet to track the ball.
"I've missed a couple this past month," Stanton said. "So it was good to get one."
After Stanton made the great grab, teammate Christian Yelich yelled: "It's about time," according to the Miami Herald. Marlins manager Don Mattingly joked that Stanton had several other chances to rob home runs this season, but didn't complete the catches.
"He's had like four chances, right? He's missed three in a row," Mattingly told the Herald. "[Marlins outfielder Marcell] Ozuna said he's been working with him."
Miami (51-55) has now won four consecutive series and is 5-2 on its current home stand.
