Former MLB great, Baltimore Orioles legend Lee May dead at 74

Lee May, who hit 354 career home runs playing for four teams in Major League Baseball, has died. He was 74.

No cause of death has been announced.

May played parts of 18 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals. He was a three-time All-Star (1969, 1971, 1972) and led the American League in RBIs with 109 as a member of the Orioles in 1976.

May appeared in the World Series twice -- with the Reds in 1970 and with the Orioles in 1979.

The Reds offered their condolences to the family, friends and former teammates of May, a member of the club's Hall of Fame.

"We are deeply saddened to lose the Big Bopper. Lee May was a friend of the hall and of everyone with whom he came in contact," said Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. "Our condolences go out to Lee's family during this difficult time. We will always remember him for his contributions to the Reds, but also for his humor and genuine kindness."

May played for the Reds from 1965-1971 and led the team in home runs three times. He was enshrined in the Reds Hall of Fame during induction ceremonies in 2006 along with Tom Browning and Tom Seaver.

The Orioles and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association both tweeted their condolences Sunday.

"We mourn the loss of Orioles Hall of Famer Lee May and will honor him with a pregame moment of silence tomorrow," the Orioles wrote on Twitter.

The MLBPAA tweeted: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of three-time All-Star Lee May, who hit 354 home runs in his career. Rest in peace, Lee."
