Arizona Diamondbacks LHP Robbie Ray gets normal CT scan result after taking liner to head

July 29 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray received a normal result on his CT scan Friday after being hit in the head by a line drive in a 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The left-handed starter was on the hill in the second inning at Busch Stadium during the incident. He forced Cardinals right fielder Randal Grichuk into a ground out before eying first baseman Luke Voit. Ray fired in a 93.5 mph four-seam fastball for his first offering. Voit turned it around for a 108 mph line drive. The comebacker went straight toward Ray, drilling him in the head. The pitcher immediately collapsed to the ground.

Catcher Chirs Herrmann ran to assist Ray, while third baseman Daniel Descalso somehow managed to make a diving catch off of the head deflection, which traveled more than 60 feet away into foul territory.

Ray held the back of his head as the medical team came out to assist. He was then taken off of the field on a cart. Voit came over to check on his opponent's status and he gave a thumbs up to the crowd before he exited the stadium.

"It happened so fast," Descalso told MLB.com. "I knew the ball hit Robbie somewhere and popped up in the air, and I just went after it, caught it and then tried to go check on him as fast as I could. Everything happened so fast, I didn't realize it hit him in the head."

Diamondbacks manager Tony Lovullo said after the game that Ray received the CT scan at a local hospital and was later checked out. He received stitches in his head. Ray returned to Busch Stadium for a shower and then went back to the team hotel.

He is now in Major League Baseball's concussion protocol. Ray, 25, allowed one hit and struck out two batters in 1.2 innings. Voit was 0-for-2 with a walk in the victory.
