New York Yankees' Aaron Judge breaks Joe DiMaggio's rookie HR record

July 8 (UPI) -- Slugger Aaron Judge didn't even need a full season to break Joe DiMaggio's record for home runs by a New York Yankees rookie.

The sensational outfielder set the new franchise mark by blasting his 30th long ball of the season Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

"We are all witnesses. #AllRise," the Yankees tweeted, referencing Judge's nickname and fan cheering section at Yankee Stadium.

DiMaggio needed 138 games to set the mark in 1936, while Judge hit 30 dingers in 82 contests this season. Only Mark McGwire hit more home runs (33) as a rookie before the All-Star break.

"It's pretty special. It's a pretty special name he passed," manager Joe Girardi told MLB.com. "It's very incredible what he's done in the first half of the season. You talk about the home runs, the walks, the average he's hit for, the defense he's played. It's a pretty special first half."

The Yankees lost Friday's game 9-4 to the Brewers. Judge's home run came on a 1-0 offering from Brewers lefty Josh Hader. He swatted the pitch 445 feet in the fifth inning, clearing the left centerfield fence. The homer gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Judge went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.

Judge, 25, leads baseball in home runs. His .330 batting average is third in the American League. His 66 RBI are second in the league.

Major League Baseball's record for home runs by a rookie is 49, a mark McGwire set in 1987 with the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees had lost five of their last six games heading into Saturday's afternoon battle against the Brewers. The series ends at Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

Judge's 29th homer came Wednesday off of Marco Estrada in the Yankees' 7-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

"It's quite an honor," Judge told MLB.com. "It's been a fun first half so far. I'm blessed to be in this position with my teammates around me, always putting me in the right spot and helping me do my best and helping me succeed."
