St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguer turns infield popup into a three-bagger

By Alex Butler

July 7 (UPI) -- How many minor league infielders does it take to catch an infield fly?

Apparently more than four.

Outfielder Randy Arozarena, of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, was up to bat in the seventh inning Thursday against the Midland RockHounds. He took a 2-1 offering and sliced a pop-up just behind the pitcher's mound.

Four RockHounds players invaded the small grassy area. RockHounds first baseman Viosergy Rosa had the best beat on the ball, but he misjudged where it would land, diving short and letting it drop. With nobody standing on the bases, Arozarena was able to sprint past the clueless infielders and safely slide into third base.

Although the announcers said the play was an infield triple, it was technically an error on Rosa, which resulted in Arozarena advancing to third base.

"Randy Arozarena with one of the craziest plays we've seen in years," the Springfield Cardinals tweeted.

The Rockhounds are a Double-A Oakland Athletics affiliate.

A Reddit user, who said he works in the instant replay department for "one of the worst teams in Triple-A," posted that the play made him feel like he "was at work."

The RockHounds could have been hopeful to keep the folly under the radar with only 5,863 fans attending Thursday's game, but the error has quickly gone viral.

The Cardinals (43-41) won the contest 2-1 on a walk-off home run from Andrew Knizer at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

Arozarena is hitting .077 in four games for the Cardinals. He went 0-for-3 with a run and a walk in Thursday's victory. The 22-year-old Cuban hit .275, with eight home runs, 40 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 70 games this season for the Single-A Palm Beach Cardinals this season.

Cardinals second baseman Kolton Wong is currently on a Major League rehab assignment with Springfield. Wong, 26, hit the disabled list in June due to a strained right triceps. He is hitting .301 with a home run and 19 RBI this season.
