Top MLB Draft pick Royce Lewis homers in first at-bat

June 26 (UPI) -- Minnesota Twins fans won't have to wait long to get excited about Royce Lewis, who hit a home run in his first at-bat.

Lewis went 2-for-4 Monday in his Minor League debut. He was playing for the Gulf Cost League Twins.

The long ball went at least 400 feet, according to KSTP News. He hit it off of Orioles right-handed prospect Luis Perez.

Lewis was drafted out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, Cali. The shortstop helped the GCL Twins to a 5-2 victory at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Lee County, Fla.

"It was awesome," Lewis told MiLB.com. "You work so hard and finally become a player in the Minors, and it's a great start to your professional career. Rounding the bases, it felt amazing."

Lewis, 18, hit the fastball to center field. It was the third offering from Perez. Lewis also connected in the eighth inning for a two out single to center field. He had a groundout in the fourth inning and lined out in the sixth frame.

Twins scouting director Sean Johnson told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the club was impressed by the top prospect's demeanor, as well as his obvious talent.

"This guy has a chance to change a franchise with his personality and charisma," Johnson told the Star Tribune. "He's a magnet. People want to be around him."

The 6-foot-2-inch prospect signed on June 17.

"So far I feel like I've handled it very well. I'm very blessed to be in this position and to have a chance to play at this type of level and higher levels in the future," he told MiLB.com.
