DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers cleanup hitter and designated hitter Victor Martinez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday after spending the night in the hospital for observation of an irregular heartbeat.

Detroit called up catcher/first baseman John Hicks from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens for the third time this season to replace Martinez on the roster.

Martinez was removed from Thursday night's 5-3 win over Tampa Bay after reaching first base on a run-scoring two-out error by Rays shortstop Daniel Robertson in the seventh inning.

Manager Brad Ausmus inserted a pinch-runner for Martinez.

"I didn't find out about it until he came out of the game," Ausmus said. "He was kind of playing through it. Probably my first thought was that maybe it was dehydration. I'm not sure the doctors even know what caused it.

"I think after his second at-bat is when he mentioned it to (head trainer) Kevin Rand."

Ausmus was unsure whether Martinez would have to spend a second night in the hospital or not.

"I'll know more about it Saturday," Ausmus said.

Martinez had two singles in the game, including one that gave him his first RBI of June.
