Atlanta Braves fan face plants, loses race after huge lead

By Alex Butler

June 11 (UPI) -- An Atlanta Braves fan suffered an embarrassing fate this weekend while losing a race to 'The Freeze.'

The contest went down at Friday's game, which the Braves won 3-2 against the New York Mets at SunTrust Park. The Braves' midgame performer gave his 'lucky-to-be-chosen' foe a huge head start of at least 200 feet during the warning track footrace.

Nigel 'The Freeze' Talton then closed in on the male contestant as he was nearing the finish line. The contestant threw his arms up in celebration, before spotting 'The Freeze' running by in his bright green body suit right next to him. He gave a shocked expression and tripped over his own feet, falling face-first into the dirt. 'The Freeze' coasted through the finish line with another victory.

"The #beatthefreeze race at the @Braves game is the best in game promo I've ever seen! Enjoy... sorry young fella," St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright tweeted.

Talton is a member of the Braves' grounds crew. He ran track at Kennesaw State.

He nearly lost Saturday's race after stumbling at the start.

Talton was a six-time letterman at Peach County High Schol, earning the honor twice in track and four times in football. He also competed in the 60-meter dash at the 2013 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. His best time is 6.77 seconds in 60 meters and 10.47 in 100 meters. He also ran a 21.98 second 200-meter race.
