June 7 (UPI) -- Shortstop Jean Segura signed a $70 million contract extension with the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
The pact includes a $17 million option for 2023, according to Z101. MLB.com first reported a rumored deal.
Segura, 27, is currently on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain. He led baseball last season with 203 hits. Segura spent his first season in the big leagues with the Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee Brewers in 2012. He was an All-Star for Milwaukee in 2013 while hitting .294 with 12 home runs, 49 RBI and 44 stolen bases. He was traded from the Brewers to the Arizona Diamondbacks in January 2016, before being shipped to the Mariners in November in a five-player trade.
In 43 games this season, Segura is hitting a league-best .341 with four home runs, 20 RBI and seven steals. Segura hit the 10-day disabled list on Friday after injuring his right ankle on a slide into second base.
After his injury, Segura sounded optimistic about his return.
"It was feeling really bad the first day," he told the Seattle Times Saturday. "The last couple days I've been feeling much better. I don't think this is going to take too much time."
General Manager Jerry Dipoto sounded less cheery about his prospects.
"It's more likely to be a month than 10 days, which is a somewhat optimistic view," Dipoto told 950 KJR radio Friday. "Could be as much as 2 months."
Mariners manager Scott Servais told MLB.com Tuesday he was optimistic about Segura's recovery and he could return to baseball activities this week.
