Minnesota Twins left-hander Glen Perkins was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Sunday as he continues his recovery from last season's shoulder surgery.

The three-time All-Star closer had a torn labrum repaired on June 23. His labrum was discovered to be totally detached from the shoulder and there isn't yet a timetable for his return.

Twins manager Paul Molitor named right-hander Brandon Kintzler as the closer to open the season.

"Kintzler is my closer," Molitor told the Pioneer Press. "I've talked to Brandon some about being open-minded about some situations maybe a little bit unique to the old-school closer definition."

Kintzler, 32, went 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA and 17 saves for Minnesota last season. He is 10-11 with a 3.33 ERA in 226 career appearances.

Perkins, 34, saved 102 games in a three-season span prior to last season's injury woes. He is 35-25 with a 3.83 ERA and 120 saves in 401 career appearances (44 starts).
