Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado will not be ready for Opening Day after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.
Prado was injured Wednesday playing for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He also is dealing with a calf strain.
"I want to make sure that I'm 100 percent and not trying to rush this," Prado told the Miami Herald. "First of all, I just have to get pain-free running. That's our main goal now and after that be strong enough to hold up with a healthy hamstring."
Prado was hurt trying to beat out an infield single during the sixth inning of Venezuela's 4-2 loss Wednesday against the United States.
The 33-year-old Prado signed a three-year, $40 million contract in the offseason. He batted .305 with eight homers and 75 RBIs last season.
The Marlins won't rush Prado back to action.
"Hamstrings take a little bit of time, and we'll let the doctors determine what grade it is and see what we're going to have to do," manager Don Mattingly said. "You're just guessing at a timeline with guys getting back."
