Nick Swisher, Alex Rodriguez returning to New York Yankees

Feb. 14 (UPI) -- With 15 All-Star appearances, three MVP awards, and a couple of World Series rings between them, it wouldn't hurt the New York Yankees to add their experience.

But Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez's presence at spring training won't be for competition's sake. The duo isn't trying to make the Pinstripes' opening day roster, but is hoping to improve it from a coaching standpoint.

Rodriguez and Swisher will serve as guest instructors for the Yankees this month, according to multiple reports. Swisher, 36, has not officially retired from Major League Baseball, but hasn't played in the big leagues since 2015. Swisher was brought on last season by the Yankees on a minor league deal. He played 55 games before deciding to depart baseball to be with his family.

He was also cut by the Atlanta Braves before the season.

Goose Gossage, Ron Guidry, Reggie Jackson, Hideki Matsui, Lee Mazzilli, Stump Merrill, Willie Randolph will join Rodriguez and Swisher as guest instructors.

Rodriguez, 41, and Swisher were instructors this fall with the Yankees' instructional league team and were teammates from 2009 through 2012 with the franchise, winning a World Series in 2009. Despite numerous offseason rumors of Rodriguez signing on with a new team, the New York Daily News reported last month that he won't attempt a comeback.
