Pete Rose: MLB gives permission to Philadelphia Phillies to honor third baseman

Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball's 'Hit King' might not be able to unlock the doors of Cooperstown, but he will be on a Wall of Fame.

Pete Rose, who played the majority of his career for the Cincinnati Reds, will be honored on the Philadelphia Phillies' Wall of Fame. Rose, 75, had 826 hits in five seasons for the Phillies. He finished his 24-year career with a record 4,256 hits, 3,562 games played, 15,890 plate appearances, and 14,053 at-bats. Rose hit .307 in 19 seasons with the Reds and .291 with the Phillies. The 1963 Rookie of the Year and 1973 National League MVP won the World Series with the 1975 and 1976 Reds and also with the 1980 Phillies.

Rose voluntarily accepted a permanent ban from baseball in 1989 for gambling on the sport while managing and playing for the Reds.

The Phillies received permission from Major League Baseball to make Rose eligible for the honor, despite his place on the league's ineligible list.

Rose's process to getting on the wall begins with fan balloting, which should open online later this month on Phillies.com, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Phillies will place its next player onto the Wall of Fame on Aug. 12 at Citizens Bank Park. The Reds inducted Rose into its Hall of Fame last year at Great American Ballpark.
