Seattle Mariners snag LHP Dillon Overton from Oakland Athletics

Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The Oakland Athletics designated Dillon Overton for assignment on Wednesday.

On Thursday the left-handed pitcher was traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league catcher Jason Goldstein, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

"Dillon has been successful at every level of the minor leagues," Dipoto said in a release. "He is a young, controllable pitcher with Major League upside who adds to our depth."

Overton was 13-5 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 games with AAA Nashville last season. The 25-year-old tossed 105 strikeouts and had 31 walks. He entered 2016 ranked as the Athletics' No. 8 prospect, according to Baseball America. Overton was 1-3, with an 11.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts, and 7 walks in seven games for the Athletics.

Goldstein, 22, split 2016 with the Arizona League Mariners and Short-A Everett. He hit .279, with two doubles, and six RBI in 19 games.
