Freddy Galvis avoids arbitration, signs $4.35 million pact with Philadelphia Phillies

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Switch-hitting shortstop Freddy Galvis agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, avoiding arbitration.

Galvis, 27, made $2 million last season. His new deal is worth $4.35 million, according to multiple reports. He has another season of arbitration eligibility before possibly testing out free agency in 2019.

In his fifth season, second as the Phillies' starting shortstop, Galvis hit a career-high 20 home runs and netted 67 RBI. He hit .241 and had 17 stolen bases in 584 at-bats. He was also one of the best defensive shortstops in the National League, nearly winning a Gold Glove.
