The Pittsburgh Pirates designated outfield prospect Willy Garcia for assignment on Saturday to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Ivan Nova, who signed with the team earlier this week.

Garcia, 24, hit .245 with six home runs for Triple-A Indianapolis in 129 games last season, while striking out 131 times in 499 plate appearances.

The Pirates re-signed Nova to a three-year, $26 million contract on Tuesday. Nova was traded to the Pirates from the New York Yankees prior to last season's trade deadline. He was 5-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 starts with Pittsburgh.
