BOSTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Not long ago, a tearful Big Papi said farewell to Fenway Park and the Boston Red Sox, closing out an illustrious 20-year baseball career. On Tuesday he was rethinking his retirement plans.
The Red Sox recently opened its checkbook for former Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale in a blockbuster trade. The deal involved giving Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz to the White Sox in exchange for the five-time All-Star.
But Red Sox fans hope to acquire a more familiar piece after Ortiz teased a comeback, upon hearing the news of the trade.
"My god," Ortiz wrote on Instagram. "My boy Sale to Btown? You guys got me thinking."
Ortiz, 41, looked youthful in his final season in Boston. He swatted 38 home runs and 127 RBI while raking .315 in 151 games.
Sale, 27, led baseball with six complete games while tossing 233 strikeouts and holding a 3.34 ERA in 32 starts. He tied a career-high with 17 wins for the White Sox.
