Chicago Cubs' Kyle Schwarber out for the season

CHICAGO, April 8 (UPI) -- Chicago looked to be on a collision course to represent the National League in the World Series this season.

But it could be a collision that throws the Cubs off of its course.

Left fielder Kyle Schwarber was carted off of the field after colliding with center fielder Dexter Fowler Thursday in the Cub's 14-6 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Schwarber suffered a left ankle sprain on the play and initial x-rays were negative.

"I'm not going to be down in spirits," Schwarber told reporters after the game. "We'll just wait until tomorrow and see what happens."

After Schwarber's Friday MRI, the news became grim.

ESPN Chicago reporter Jesse Rogers reported that Schwarber has a "full torn ACL and LCL." The news means a short season for Schwarber, who also has a "severe ankle sprain" and two torn knee ligaments. Rogers reported that there is no timetable yet for recovery.

Schwarber, 23, was 0-for-4 at the plate so far this season but hit .246, with 16 home runs and 43 RBI in 273 plate appearances last season.

Munenori Kawasaki is expected to be called up to replace Schwarber.
