MIAMI, June 15 (UPI) -- Nearly 14 months have passed since Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has taken the mound.

But during the Marlins game Monday against the New York Yankees, Hernandez appeared and said that he is scheduled to suit up on July 2 against the San Francisco Giants at Marlins Park, according to multiple sources.

Fernandez, 22, threw five scoreless innings Friday in his second rehab start for Single-A Jupiter's game against Port Charlotte at Roger Dean Stadium. He allowed two hits in the start and had four strikeouts on 65 pitches.

Fernandez had elbow ligament replacement surgery in May 2014.

"It's been a little while since I stepped on that mound," Fernandez told the Miami Herald. "I can't wait. I just can't wait to get on that mound and getting my pants dirty."

The 2013 National League rookie of the year is 16-8 with a 2.25 ERA and 257 strikeouts in 224⅓ innings in 28 career starts.
