Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Professional golfer Bill Haas and actor Luke Wilson were involved in a deadly car crash in Los Angeles.

The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when a Ferrari hit Wilson's Toyota FJ SUV. The Ferrari then collided with a BMW, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The department's West Traffic Division told NBC Los Angeles that the 71-year-old man driving the Ferrari died as the result of the crash. Haas, a passenger in the Ferrari, was transported to a hospital and has since been released.

An LAPD spokesman told WSPA that Haas is "doing OK." The BMW's two passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Haas, 35, was in the area to participate in the Genesis Open golf tournament. The crash occurred about 2.5 miles from the Riviera Country Club.

The No. 67 ranked golfer in the world has withdrawn from the tournament.

The PGA Tour and Haas' Players Group Management released a statement Wednesday:

"Last night in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Bill Haas was involved in a serious car accident in which the driver -- a member of the family with whom Haas and his family were staying for the Genesis Ope-n - was killed. While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and -- more importantly -- his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.

Bill will withdraw from the Genesis Open and plans to head home to Greenville to recover.  He appreciates the support of friends, family and the golf world as a whole, and he has asked for privacy as he processes what has happened."

The 2018 Genesis Open tees off on Thursday and ends Sunday.
