The Open 2017: Jordan Spieth gets trapped on mini mountain for bogey, eagles No. 15

July 23 (UPI) -- Jordan Spieth entered Sunday with a three shot lead over American Matt Kuchar in the 2017 Open Championship. He didn't disappoint in the final round, managing a bogey on an insane lie.

Spieth shot a 5-under for 65 Saturday and led after three rounds of the 146th edition of the tournament at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.

The 23-year-old bogeyed the first, third and fourth hole before scoring a birdie on No. 5 on the final day.

"That's just crap, man. That's just crap," Spieth said after his errant tee shot on the first hole Sunday. "Not get rewarded for a good shot."

But his day got much better.

He hit another bogey on the ninth hole before reaching No. 13.

He approached the tee box on No. 13 tied for the lead with Kuchar at 8-under. Spieth's drive was not ideal, to be kind.

It landed about 100 yards to the right of the fairway on the rock face of a hill, covered in harsh weeds and grass. Spieth put both hands on his head in displeasure of the shot. The golf gallery swarmed the tiny mountain in pursuit of his ball.

He conversed with officials, for what felt like an eternity, before deciding to take an unplayable and hit the shot from elsewhere. He finished with a bogey on the hole.

Kuchar failed to capitalize on Spieth's error, just managing to gain one stroke on his opponent.

Spieth birdied No. 14 and drilled nearly a 40-foot putt for eagle on No. 15. He also birded No. 16 to earn a two-stroke lead on Kuchar heading into the final two holes. Kuchar and Spieth went on to birdie No. 17.

Spieth is ranked No. 3 in the World Golf Rankings while Kuchar is ranked No. 18. Kuchar has never won a major championship, while Spieth hasn't won a major since he won the Masters and U.S. Open in 2015.

Kuchar has seven career PGA Tour victories while Spieth has 10. Spieth won the 2017 Travelers Championship in June at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
