Tiger Woods completes 'intensive' treatment program to deal with medications

Tiger Woods says he has finished a treatment program to help him deal with medications he was taking for back and sleep difficulties.

The 41-year-old Woods was arrested May 29 on DUI charges after he was found asleep at the wheel of his vehicle in Florida. After he registered a 0.0 on a Breathalyzer test, he said alcohol was not involved but that he had an "unexpected reaction" to prescription drugs.

"I recently completed an out of state private intensive program," Woods tweeted Monday. "I will continue to tackle this going forward with my doctors, family and friends. I am so very thankful for all of the support I've received."

Woods had fusion surgery on April 19 and had said in public comments days before his arrest that he was feeling better than he had in years.

After his arrest, Woods said he was taking four prescriptions for pain. In addition to Vicodin, he was also using Xanax, the Golf Channel later learned.

"Tiger has been dealing with so much pain physically," his agent, Mark Steinberg, said in June. "And that leads to insomnia and sleep issues. This has been going on for a long time."

Woods' golf career has been derailed by back issues starting in 2014 when he had the first of four surgeries. The 14-time major winner has played sparingly since then and remains stuck on 79 career victories.

Late last year, Woods tried to make a comeback, but he last played in two events in January and February. He missed the cut in one and withdrew because of back spasms the following week after one round.

It's uncertain when or if Woods, once the world's No. 1 player for 683 weeks, will be able to return to the PGA Tour.
