June 17 (UPI) -- Australian golfer Steve Elkington was on the wrong end of a Twitter spat against Rory McIlroy Friday night. Elkington was watching the U.S. Open before he made a backhanded compliment about McIlroy.
"Rory is so bored playing golf...without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank," Elkington tweeted.
McIlroy responded with his own tweet about 30 minutes later.
"More like 200mil...not bad for a "bored" 28 year old...plenty more where that came from," McIlroy wrote.

"New you were a money guy. Jack [Nicklaus] won 18 and never mentioned his total cash," Elkington responded. "It was 5 mill."
"That's why jack designed 100's of golf courses...and it's knew...mustn't have taught grammar in the 50's," McIlroy replied.

But Elkington wasn't done, despite being shown the door by the No. 2 ranked golfer in the world.
He also tweeted that he was "way off" regarding McIlroy's 200 million fortune and agreed when a Twitter user said that McIlroy was "thin skinned."
McIlroy missed the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open but plans to play next week in the Travelers Championship.
