Wesley Bryan earns first title at RBC Heritage

Wesley Bryan fired a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to win his first PGA title at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C.

Beginning the day four shots back of the lead, Bryan edged out England's Luke Donald by one shot to become the first South Carolina native in the 49-year history of the RBC Heritage to win with a 13-under 271 total.

"This is as good as it gets," Bryan said. "It's one that I grew up dreaming on the practice green late at night when I was a kid, like this putt's to win the Heritage. And to get it done here is one of the coolest experiences ever."

Bryan posted his first bogey in 42 holes at the par-3 fourth, but reeled off four consecutive birdies at Nos. 4-7 and two more at Nos. 13 and 15.

"I got really nervous. I'm not going to lie," he said. "But was able to keep it together and I was hitting quality shots coming down the stretch."

Donald posted his fifth career runner-up at the RBC Heritage, with rounds of 65-67-72-68 for a 272 total. He also entered the day four shots back of the lead and fell further back with a double bogey at the par-5 second, but the five-time tour winner made birdies at Nos. 5, 9, 11, 13, and 14 to take the lead with four to play.

"Yeah, obviously the worst possible start. A double on 2, which is kind of a birdie hole. And just never felt very comfortable on that tee shot all week," Donald said. "But really happy with the grinding and the grit that I showed today to come back and give myself a chance."

Donald made four pars coming in to fall to Bryan by a shot, finishing as the runner-up at the event for the third time in four years.

Third round leader Jason Dufner shot a 5-over-par 76 on the final day to finish tied for 11th place.

Patrick Cantlay (final-round 67), Ollie Schniederjans (68), and William McGirt (69) finished tied for third at 11-under-par. It was the highest finish on the tour for the rookie Schniederjans.

It was a great week and a good experience on the back, and I tried to win the golf tournament and I came up a little short maybe this time," Schniederjans said. "But another good experience on Sunday."

Bryan, 27, is the third rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season, joining Cody Gribble and Mackenzie Hughes. He becomes the sixth first-time winner of the 2016-17 Season.
