Brittany Lincicome wins over Lexi Thompson in playoff in Bahamas

Brittany Lincicome shot a birdie on the first playoff hole to outlast fellow American Lexi Thompson on Sunday and win the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Lincicome and Thompson finished at 26-under 266 on the Ocean Course, one shy of Annika Sorenstam's record set at the 2001 Standard Register Ping in Phoenix.

Lincicome shot a 5-under 68 in the final round and Thompson shot 70. Stacy Lewis (71) finished one shot back at 25-under and Gerina Piller (71) was two shots off the pace.

Thompson held a one-shot lead heading to the 18th hole before Lincicome delivered a birdie to tie her for the lead. Thompson shot par and the two went to the playoff on the same hole.

Lincicome again birdied the hole and Thompson attempted to extend the playoff but her long birdie attempt was wide to the left.

The victory was Lincicome's seventh on the LPGA tour. She collected seven birdies against two bogeys during Sunday's round.

"Just the leader board all week has been amazing, obviously a lot of Americans up at the top, obviously friends of mine, so to come down to the final stretch, I played with Lexi yesterday, and it was an awesome day," Lincicome said after the victory. "I worked hard this offseason. My putting hasn't been as well as it has this week, but hopefully that continues and it's awesome."

Thompson posted five birdies against two bogeys in her final round and was optimistic despite falling in the playoff.

"This whole offseason, I swear I putted 2 1/2 hours each day, it seemed like," Thompson said. "I was just doing nonstop putting drills just trying to get my confidence up, and it showed here. It's paying off. I'm going to keep working extremely hard and stay confident with it."

Lewis held a share of the lead after 13 holes but a triple-bogey on the par-4 14th hole cost her. Her second shot hit a palm tree and bounced off a cart path and into a landscaped area. Her next shot hit a curb and bounced right back into the landscaped area.

"I mean, there's not much really I could have done better other than hit a better shot from the second shot," Lewis said. "But other than that, we made 30 something birdies this week and playing some good golf, so I'm pretty happy with it."

Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum and 18-year-old American Nelly Korda tied for fifth at 21-under 271. Both shot final-round 67s.

American Austin Ernst (68) made it seven players who shot 20 below par or better by finishing at 272.
