ATLANTA -- World No. 1 Jason Day has withdrawn from the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, ending his chance to win the FedEx Cup.

Day withdrew during the eighth hole of Friday's second round. He has a strained ligament in his lower right back and experienced a muscle spasm. Day withdrew as a precautionary measure and is expected to be fine after some offseason rest.

Day shot a 3-under 67 in the first round and began the day one shot off the lead. He was even par on his round through seven holes, with one bogey and one birdie.

The Australian has been fighting back issues all summer. It also caused him to withdraw from the BMW Championship, the third FedEx Cup playoff event.
