Former Boise State running back Jack Fields was shot and killed Thursday night during an incident in which he allegedly attacked a Sheriff's deputy in Augusta, Ga.

Fields was shot at least once and died as a result of the injuries after attacking the deputy and stabbing him multiple times, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

According to a statement released by the GBI, the Richmond County's Sheriff's Office was summoned to a Residence Inn in Augusta "regarding a trouble with subject call" just after 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Officer Stephan Psillos responded to the call and confronted Fields in the lobby of the hotel. When the deputy attempted to handcuff Fields, he "pulled a knife from his coat pocket and attacked Deputy Psillos stabbing him multiple times. Deputy Psillos fired his service weapon striking Fields," the statement said.

An autopsy was performed on Fields on Friday. Results are not expected to be released until next month.

Psillos was treated for his wounds at an area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the GBI

"From everything that I have seen, it was totally justifiable," Sheriff Richard Roundtree told the Augusta Chronicle. "Again, I don't need to make that kind of determination. My only concern is if my deputy is going to be OK, going to recover."

Fields played four seasons (2012-15) at Boise State. He rushed for 336 yards and one touchdown on 109 carries.
