LSU Tigers, Les Miles reach agreement on contract buyout

Former LSU head coach Les Miles, who reportedly is a candidate for the Kansas coaching vacancy, reached agreement on a settlement with LSU for a one-time, lump-sum payment of $1.5 million on his remaining guarantee from the school.

LSU owed Miles $6.5 million in guaranteed salary after firing him in September 2016.

At the time of his dismissal, Miles was owed about $9 million, a sum to be paid in monthly installments until 2023.

However, LSU no longer owes Miles anything after the agreement that was reached on Thursday.

"It's time for both parties to move forward," LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a statement. "One of the challenges of the buyout that was in place was there just wasn't a lot of incentive to move on to other things. We were looking to provide that, and Coach Miles and his representatives also were ready."

LSU went 114-34 under Miles, who was the Tigers' head coach from 2005 to 2016. Miles won the national championship at LSU in 2007.

Miles, 65, has not coached since being dismissed by LSU, but there have been reports that there is interest in both sides regarding the job opening at Kansas.

Kansas announced on Nov. 4 that David Beaty would not return as head coach.

Kansas athletic director Jeff Long and Miles know each other from the time both were at the University of Michigan in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
