Rob Gronkowski surprises Texas Tech walk-on with football scholarship

By Alex Butler

Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Justus Parker received the news that he was now on scholarship at Texas Tech on Monday -- from Rob Gronkowski.

The sophomore defensive back was sitting at a team meeting with the Red Raiders before coach Kliff Kingsbury stopped and told his team to look up at a projection screen.

"Last night, sent us a little message," Kingsbury said in a video he posted to Twitter. "I wanted you all to see it. So let's take a look at what the victorious New England Patriots had to say."

The screen then showed Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola. He was sitting with the team after the Patriots beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Heinz Field. Amendola played for Texas Tech from 2004 through 2007.

"Justus, what's up? It's Danny Amendola with the Patriots. Listen, I appreciate and love the way you work and wear that red and black and my boy wants to tell you something."

Amendola then panned over to Patriots All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski.

"Justus, what's up man? Congratulations, you're on scholarship. Woo! Hard work pays off."

"You're on scholarship bro, let's go," Amendola said.

The room immediately erupted into mayhem before the team then broke it down.

"Unbelievable moment getting told by @RobGronkowski and @DannyAmendola that I am officially on Scholarship!! Thankful and blessed to attend Texas Tech University," Parker tweeted Monday.

"Blessed to be apart of this program...thank you to all those who have supported me along the way!! #TTVE."

Parker was a key member of the scout team during his redshirt season in 2016. He transferred to Texas Tech after spending his 2015 season with Texas Lutheran. Parker attended La Vernia High School in Texas.
