Reports: Dan Mullen reaches agreement with Florida Gators to become next head coach

Mississippi State's Dan Mullen has reportedly reached an agreement to become the new coach at Florida, multiple outlets reported Sunday.

Mullen was formerly an assistant coach at Florida during Urban Meyer's stint at the school. Mullen was the offensive coordinator for the Gators' 2006 and 2008 national championship teams.

The 45-year-old Mullen was hired after the second title by the Bulldogs and has a 69-46 record in nine seasons at the school. He is the second-winningest coach in Mississippi State history.

The Bulldogs are 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the SEC this season. Mississippi State will play in a bowl game for the eighth straight season.

Mullen also reportedly was under consideration for the Tennessee job.

Florida swung and missed at top target Chip Kelly and then reportedly turned its attention to Mullen and Central Florida coach Scott Frost. Kelly took the UCLA job last week and Frost reportedly turned down Florida's overtures on Sunday morning.

Mullen is also highly familiar with Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin, who was formerly the AD at Mississippi State.

Mullen replaces Jim McElwain, who was fired in midseason. McElwain went 22-12 in 2 1/2 seasons.

The Gators went 4-7 this season for just their second losing season since 1979.
