Florida center T.J. McCoy has been hospitalized after being hit by a car early Friday morning.
McCoy and his girlfriend, Precious Ichite, were on a scooter near campus when they were struck by a 2011 Honda Civic, according to Gainesville (Fla.) Police.
They were thrown from the scooter and taken to Shands Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the police report.
McCoy's father, Tony, posted the following update on his Facebook page:
"At 3 am this morning my wife and I received a call from the Trauma unit at Shands Hospital informing us that our son TJ had been in a hit and run accident and was found on the side of the road," McCoy wrote. "It turned out that a drunk driver hit TJ and his girlfriend at a stop light after they left the library and fled the scene. With little information and declaring VICTORY, my family and I headed to Gainesville. Seems like, within minutes after we received the call, his Offensive Line coach was in the hospital with him keeping us updated."
Samantha Meldrem, 22, was arrested after hitting the scooter and fleeing the scene. She is facing two misdemeanor counts of DUI and property damage.
On Saturday evening, McCoy took to Twitter to provide an update on his condition. The Florida offensive lineman said he was resting and regaining his strength.
McCoy transferred to Florida from North Carolina State following the 2015 season and started the final four games in 2016.
