Louisville offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway was suspended for the school's Citrus Bowl matchup with LSU because of his involvement with receiving parts of Wake Forest's game plan from now-fired radio analyst Tommy Elrod.

Galloway acknowledged earlier this week that he received some offensive plays from Elrod and passed them on to the Cardinals' defensive staff. Galloway and Elrod worked together on the Wake Forest coaching staff in 2011 and 2012.

Elrod wasn't retained on the Wake Forest staff by current coach Dave Clawson after the latter was hired following the 2013 season. Elrod reportedly began attempts to leak info to teams playing the Demon Deacons in 2014.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said Galloway shouldn't have accepted the information.

"It is clear to me that the information should not have been shared by anyone at Wake Forest and it should not have been received by anyone at the University of Louisville," Jurich said Friday in a statement.

"Although no one from Louisville sought the information, once it was provided, we did not do what should have been done. The information should not have been accepted. It should have been rejected, and officials at Wake Forest should have been alerted to the inappropriate action taken by Mr. Elrod.

"This is an unusual situation. When someone receives information, they should not be given, it is important that they do the right thing. Even in a competitive atmosphere, the right and ethical thing would have been for us to not accept the information. I regret very much that this took place."

Jurich said Louisville will accept whatever punishment the Atlantic Coast Conference deems appropriate.

The breach of information became apparent when Wake Forest officials found part of the game plan at Louisville's Papa John's Stadium during a walkthrough the day before a Nov. 12 game.

Clawson said learning of the leaked information led to the Demon Deacons to not run many of the plays in their game plan.

The university immediately launched an investigation, using phone records, text messages and emails that revealed Elrod "provided or attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions, starting in 2014."

Elrod was banned from all athletic facilities by the athletic department.

Elrod was an assistant coach for the Demon Deacons under former head coach Jim Grobe. When Grobe was fired after the 2013 season, Elrod joined Wake Forest IMG Radio Network.

Elrod played for Wake Forest from 1993 to 1997 and was quarterbacks coach and co-passing game coordinator under Grobe.

The Cardinals' bowl game against LSU is Dec. 31.
