WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Rob Sgarlata, an assistant coach at Georgetown for 18 seasons, is the Hoyas' new head football coach, the school said Tuesday.
Sgarlata had been serving as interim head coach since the Jan. 30 resignation of Kevin Kelly, who left Georgetown to be the defensive coordinator at Ball State.
Sgarlata is the fourth Georgetown alum to have played football at the school and later be hired as head coach. He received a bachelor's degree from Georgetown in 1994 and completed a master's degree there in 2012.
"Rob Sgarlata brings a wealth of relevant experience to his new leadership role in our football program," Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. "As a coach and an educator, he has shown his commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes as well as his passion for the game of football. I look forward to working with Rob to ensure that Georgetown football is a quality experience for his players."
Sgarlata led the Hoyas in rushing in 1992 and '93 as a player and joined the coaching staff as defensive line coach in 1995. He moved over to coach the receivers and tight ends before taking offensive line coaching duties in 2001. He was named defensive coordinator in 2005.
Georgetown, which went 2-9 overall last season and 1-4 in the conference, is the only Patriot League team that doesn't award football scholarships.
