ANNAPOLIS, Md., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Rakeem Cato passed for three touchdowns, including one to Gator Hoskins with 3:42 to go Friday, giving Marshall a 31-20 win over Maryland in the Military Bowl.
Cato had scoring throws of 1 yard to Tommy Shuler for the game's first score and another of 8 yards to Hoskins late in the first before hitting Hoskins for the clinching touchdown late in the game. He finished 28-of-44 passing for 337 yards.
Maryland (7-6) used two long drives to take a 20-17 lead one play into the fourth quarter. Brad Craddock kicked a 33-yard field goal to finish off a nine-play, 81-yard drive, and Dave Stinebaugh hauled in a 2-yard throw from C.J. Brown to finish off a 17-play, 99-yard possession that put Maryland ahead for the first time on the day.
But Marshall (10-4) answered less than 3 minutes later with Essray Taliaferro bulling over from the 7-yard-line that returned the lead to the Thundering Herd.
Marshall twice forced Maryland to punt, eventually taking over at midfield with 5:53 to go. Cato connected with Hoskins, who had six receptions for 104 yards, on back-to-back plays, with the second one resulting in the deciding touchdown.
Brown hit Levern Jacobs on a 29-yard play for a first-period Maryland touchdown and Craddock got the Terrapins within 14-10 with a 25-yard field goal.
Marshall countered with a 27-yard field goal from Justin Haig and Maryland was within 17-13 at halftime after a 33-yard Craddock field goal.
