TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual battery is no longer pressing charges, the Tallahassee Democrat reported Tuesday.
A Nov. 12 email written by a Tallahassee, Fla., city official and obtained by the newspaper revealed an investigation of the alleged December 2012 incident came to halt after the woman involved became unwilling to pursue a case against Winston.
The email, sent from City Manager Anita Favors Thompson to Tallahassee city commissioners, indicated the alleged victim had first accused Winston of "taking advantage" of her while intoxicated at a local bar.
After an initial investigation, however, police encountered resistance from the woman, who stopped responding to questions, Thompson wrote.
The email indicated the woman's attorney contacted police and said she didn't want to press charges against the Heisman Trophy favorite, who this season has led the Seminoles to a No. 2 ranking and a shot at the national championship.
It revealed the case only became active again this week after police received several requests from local and national media about its status, prompting a review by State Attorney Willie Meggs.
In another document obtained by the Democrat, the woman's lawyer requested Tallahassee Police to not release any information about "her rape" to the media under Florida's Rape Shield Law.
