Kentucky football player survives car-flipping accident with only cuts

LEXINGTON, Ky., May 6 (UPI) -- University of Kentucky football player Ashley Lowery survived a serious car accident with only scrapes and cuts, a family spokesman said.

Lowery, 20, crashed his car early Saturday near his hometown of Cleveland, Ga. The car flipped over several times and Lowery, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Monday.

He was sedated in intensive care at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, but his sedation was lifted and a neck brace and feeding tube were removed Sunday, family spokesman and sports editor of Cleveland's White County News Doug Stutsman said.

"Just a ton of scrapes all over his body," Stutsman said after visiting Lowery in the hospital. "Some of them are pretty bad cuts, but they think right now he came out of it pretty clean."

Stutsman said Lowery did not sustain internal or brain injuries, and no broken bones, adding doctors will wait until he is further recovered before he is asked about how the crash occurred.
