Former Minn. Gopher Barker busted for pot

HOUSTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Former University of Minnesota wide receiver A.J. Barker was arrested in Houston on charges of marijuana possession, authorities said Wednesday.

Harris County (Texas) District Court records indicate Barker was arrested late Sunday and jailed the next day, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

He has since been released on $500 bond.

Barker was the Gophers' leading receiver when he quit the team midway through the recently completed season following an argument with Coach Jerry Kill, who he publicly criticized in an online post.

Reports indicated Barker had been offered a scholarship at the University of Houston and was slated the join the Cougars, but athletics spokesman David Bassity said that was not the case.

"A.J. Barker is not a member of our football team and was not offered a scholarship as some outlets have reported," he wrote the newspaper in an e-mail.
