Wofford, who was wearing a helmet, died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center 20 minutes after the crash. The driver of the car was not injured.

The Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.

Wofford signed a free-agent contract with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts in 2000 but was released a few months later.

At the time of his death, Wofford was the leader of the Spartanburg parks system.

Spartanburg City Manager Ed Memmott praised Wofford, who returned to the community where he had been a standout on the Spartanburg High football team.

"He had plenty of opportunities in front of him that he could have taken advantage of and he chose to come back to Spartanburg," Memmott said.

Wofford also worked with community agencies and mentored youngsters.
