STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and his wife have made a $100,000 donation to the school's library and a fellowship program, school officials said.

The gift by Paterno and his wife Sue of $50,000 to the Paterno Library and $50,000 to the Fellows Program in the College of Liberal Arts will be an annual one, the Centre Daily Times reported Tuesday.

The Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program helps students supplement their education through study abroad, internships and research, its director, Jack Selzer, said.

"[The Paternos'] continuing support for the Paterno Fellows Program is both useful and inspirational," Selzer said.

The Paterno Library was opened in fall 2000, joined to the school's renovated Pattee Library.

Penn State students and fans were stunned when university trustees announced in November that Paterno would no longer be the coach in the wake of the scandal around alleged sexual molestation incidents involving children and former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
