STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno was released from the hospital in State College, Pa., a person close to the family said.

Paterno was admitted Dec. 11 after fracturing his pelvis after slipping and falling at his home, CNN reported Monday.

The injury didn't require surgery, but doctors said because Paterno was undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer, they decided to hospitalize him.

Paterno was released Friday, the source close to the family said.

He lost his job as Nittany Lions head coach in November amid criticism he didn't do enough when allegations of sexual assault against children arose concerning his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky.

Sandusky has been arrested and charged with 50 sexual assault-related counts. An investigative grand jury's summary of testimony claimed, among other things, that Sandusky fondled, and engaged in anal and oral sex with young boys.

Paterno wasn't charged and officials said he duly referred allegations against Sandusky to his superiors. However, criticism rose quickly, and Penn State trustees dismissed Paterno and school President Graham Spanier within days of Sandusky's arrest.
