UCLA given bowl eligibility waiver

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- UCLA, which takes a 6-6 record into the Pac-10 title game versus No. 7 Oregon, was granted an NCAA waiver to accept a bowl bid even if it has a losing record.

NCAA rules mandate a team have at least six victories and a winning record.

UCLA finished the regular season 6-6 -- 5-4 in the conference-- and was placed in the first conference championship game by finishing second in the Pac-12 South. Southern California had the best record in the division but is on probation and ineligible for post-season play.

The Pac-12 championship will be decided Friday at Oregon.

"As a program, we appreciate the NCAA approving our petition for a bowl waiver," UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said. "We will be able to give our 18 seniors one more chance to represent their university and end their collegiate careers on a high note, regardless of the outcome of this Friday's Pac-12 Championship Game."
