CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Illinois football Coach Ron Zook has been fired following a disappointing 6-6 season, Athletic Director Mike Thomas said Sunday.
The Illini won their first six games of the season, raising hopes of a possible bowl appearance, but then dropped their final six, including a 27-7 loss to Minnesota Saturday.
"I assessed the entire program and felt that it was time for a change in leadership," Thomas said. "It is imperative that our program shows some consistency and competes for championships, and I think a change in coaches can help us get there sooner."
Zook compiled a 34-51 record in his seven-year tenure. He had just two winning seasons, including a 9-4 record in 2007, when the Illini went to the Rose Bowl.
Thomas said defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has been tapped as interim head coach while the search for a permanent replacement is conducted.
